To that end we\u2019ll be ascending and descending via the Zig Zags and along the way we\u2019ll be taking in the fabulous views, doing some navigation, walking on bearings, feature recognition and self locating using the 5 \u2018Ds\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Date:<\/strong> Sunday, 4th Feb<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Start:<\/strong> 9.00 am meeting at Cronins Yard carpark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Finish<\/strong>: 3.30 pm <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/dir\/Douglas,+Cork\/Cronins+Yard,+Mealis,+Beaufort,,+Killarney,+Co.+Kerry\/@51.96588,-9.7182035,9z\/data=!3m1!4b1!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x4844854127cc191b:0xc98e539ce20742f4!2m2!1d-8.4242007!2d51.8711662!1m5!1m1!1s0x484541227a8a0b55:0xad3fc35a22166627!2m2!1d-9.6959549!2d52.0266803!3e0?entry=ttu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Directions using Google Maps<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Carpooling<\/strong>: We suggest that parents organise carpooling for this and other events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cost: <\/strong>Car park \u20ac2. Before heading home we&#8217;ll have a hot choclate in the Cronins Yard cafe, your scout will need a few euro for that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Route:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mix of track, open ground and hill side scrambling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Distance is aprox 15kms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fulfils the criteria of a QMD (quality mountain day) towards their hillwalking badge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Level: Moderate <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Important:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your scout has a very good breakfast<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We will do a gear check prior to starting walk \u2013 please wait while this is being done!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We expect to be back at finish point by 3.30pm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For scouts interested in the MPCs this is a must.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hike Gear List<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Neckerchief<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Knapsack \/ small rucksack lined with a bin bag.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compass<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Map issued at meeting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hiking boots \u2013 we&#8217;ll be crossing very wet uneven ground so ankle support is a must.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Warm long socks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hiking trousers (no jeans or cotton tracksuits!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rain gear (jacket with hood &amp; pull-up waterproof trousers)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Warm clothes \u2013 multi light layers are best.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thermal skins<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hat &amp; Gloves \u2013 it will be very cold &#8211; bring 2 pairs of each.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Head torch &amp; spare batteries <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bivvy bag<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Large healthy packed lunch and snacks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Water \u2013 minimum of 1 litre, ideally 2 litres<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Personal 1st aid kit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flask with hot drink<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Walking poles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gaiters &#8211; scout must ensure they&#8217;re adjusted for their boots.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In separate bag: Change of shoes and socks + warm hoody for after hike \u2013 to be left in cars<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Weather:<\/strong> We&#8217;ll get a better forecast closer to the time, but it will be cold. <br>Important having your scout wearing multi non-cotton thin layers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Next Hike:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>: Garryduff \/ Oldcourt woods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Date<\/strong>: 5th March<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Night Navigation training<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Electronic Device Policy:<\/strong> It is advised that scouts <strong>do not bring electronic devices<\/strong>, Douglas &amp; St Finbarres Scout Group, its leaders and Scouting Ireland <strong>will not be held responsible<\/strong> for any electronic devices lost or damaged.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hiking is as much about having fun and enjoying a day on the hills as it is about getting to the top of a peak.
