To that end we&#8217;ll be going clockwise around the lake and descending via the slops to the west. Along the way we&#8217;ll be doing some navigation, walking on bearings, feature recognition and self locating using the 5 &#8216;Ds&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Date:<\/strong> Sunday, 10th December<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Start:<\/strong> 9.30 am at start of Mangerton walking trail<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Finish<\/strong>: 3.30 pm<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/dir\/Douglas+Court+Shopping+Centre,+Cork\/2G49%2BMV+Cormacs+Haggard,+Gortagullane,+Gortagullane+Upper,+Co.+Kerry\/@52.0050266,-9.4777217,3613m\/data=!3m1!1e3!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x48448545f4df2fb3:0xd05f6bcb612e3def!2m2!1d-8.4315615!2d51.8784453!1m5!1m1!1s0x48453d64265aa04f:0x26dd1d511c9d5b3f!2m2!1d-9.480339!2d52.0067016!3e0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Directions using Google Maps<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cost: <\/strong>\u20ac0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Route:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mix of track, open ground and hill side scrambling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Distance is aprox 10kms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fulfils the criteria of a QMD (quality mountain day) towards their hillwalking badge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Level Easy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"352\" height=\"377\" src=\"https:\/\/test.apeoconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/mangerton_route-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-542\" srcset=\"https:\/\/test.apeoconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/mangerton_route-1.jpg 352w, https:\/\/test.apeoconsulting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/mangerton_route-1-280x300.jpg 280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 352px) 100vw, 352px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Important:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ensure your scout has a very good breakfast<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We will do a gear check prior to starting walk &#8211; please wait while this is being done!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We expect to be back at finish point by 3.30pm<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For scouts interested in the MPCs this is a must<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hike Gear List<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Neckerchief<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Knapsack \/ small rucksack lined with a bin bag.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compass<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Map issued at meeting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hiking boots \u2013 we will be crossing very wet ground so boots are a must have.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Warm long socks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hiking trousers (no jeans or cotton tracksuits!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rain gear (jacket with hood &amp; pull-up waterproof trousers)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Warm clothes \u2013 multi light layers are best.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hat &amp; Gloves \u2013 it will be very cold!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Head torch &amp; spare batteries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bivvy bag or large heavy duty refuse sack<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Healthy packed lunch and snacks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Water \u2013 minimum of 1 ltr<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In separate small bag: Change of shoes and socks + warm hoody for after hike \u2013 to be left in cars<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Optional, if scout has these\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1st aid kit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flask with hot drink<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Walking poles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gaiters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Next Hike:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>: Carrauntoohil, Killarney<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Date<\/strong>: In January to be decided by the Scouts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Electronic Device Policy:<\/strong> It is advised that scouts <strong>do not bring electronic devices<\/strong>, Douglas &amp; St Finbarres Scout Group, its leaders and Scouting Ireland <strong>will not be held responsible<\/strong> for any electronic devices lost or damaged.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hiking is as much about having fun and enjoying a day on the hills as it is about getting to the top of a peak.
