{"id":507,"date":"2023-11-02T14:56:48","date_gmt":"2023-11-02T14:56:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dsfscouts.ie\/?p=507"},"modified":"2023-11-02T14:56:48","modified_gmt":"2023-11-02T14:56:48","slug":"cubs-and-ventures-galtees-hike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.apeoconsulting.com\/index.php\/2023\/11\/02\/cubs-and-ventures-galtees-hike\/","title":{"rendered":"Cubs: Galtees hike"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Date:<\/strong>&nbsp;Sunday, November 12<br><strong>Start:<\/strong>&nbsp;9.30 am at <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/8GvmWpVV4oKxqe5r5\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/8GvmWpVV4oKxqe5r5\">Galtymore North Car Park<\/a> <br><strong>Finish<\/strong>: Around 3 pm<br><strong>Cost:&nbsp;<\/strong>\u20ac0<br><strong>Location:&nbsp;<\/strong>Meet at <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/8GvmWpVV4oKxqe5r5\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/8GvmWpVV4oKxqe5r5\">Galtymore North Car Park<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Travel directions:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Take the M8 towards Dublin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leave M8 at exit 13 and follow the directions for Limerick (R639\/N73\/R513)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>About 15km after taking the exit there\u2019s a right turn-off for Galbally R662<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After just under 1.5km turn right at the junction (the sign says The Glen Hotel\/Lisvarinnane)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Head on straight for about 8km (you\u2019ll drive parallel to the Galtees basically)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After about 8km you will see a sign for Galtymore, turn right and follow the small boreen for 300m to the car park<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Just over 1 hour from Douglas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Route:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cubs: About 10km, with roughly 500m altitude gain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mix of track and open ground<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Suitable for all cubs and ventures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fulfils the criteria of a QMD (quality mountain day) towards the level 2 hillwalking badge<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From car park we follow the Ice Road to Lough Curra<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cubs explore small cave on the shore of Lough Curra and then return via Lough Curra Mound\/Mountain (600m)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hiiker.app\/maps\/planned-trails\/november-12-option-2--321041\">Cub route<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Note:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ensure your child had a good breakfast<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We will do a quick gear check before leaving the car park \u2013 please don\u2019t leave before this is done!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We expect to be back at Galtymore North Car Park around 3pm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hike Gear List<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Neckerchief<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/dsfscouts.ie\/hiking-boots\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"315\">Hiking boots<\/a> (not wellies!) \u2013 we will encounter some wet terrain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hiking trousers (no jeans or cotton tracksuits!)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rain gear (jacket with hood &amp; trousers)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Warm clothes \u2013 multi light layers are best.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Water \u2013 minimum of 1 ltr<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hat &amp; Gloves \u2013 it will be cold!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/dsfscouts.ie\/headlights-torches\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"236\">Headlight<\/a> &amp; spare batteries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bivvy\/survival bag or large heavy duty refuse sack<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Healthy packed lunch<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In separate small bag: Change of shoes and socks + warm hoody for after hike \u2013 will be left in cars<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Optional, if your scout has these\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1st aid kit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whistle<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compass<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gaiters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Electronic Device Policy:<\/strong>&nbsp;It is advised that scouts&nbsp;<strong>do not bring electronic devices<\/strong>, Douglas &amp;
